Management by objectives brings maximum value to the City of Gothenburg
In the latest edition of Offentliga Affärer (Public Affairs) one of our clients, the City of Gothenburg, writes about its work on change. The objective is to become better at creating maximum value because “that’s what we’re there for”. Briefly, it is about applying an amended management model based on management by objectives and employee involvement.
Ulla-Carin Olsson, Director of District Administration in Lärjedalen, explains:
When I came here about 2.5 years ago, I found that I was receiving a lot of thick reports. But I noticed that the politicians were asking for more analysis. We started considering questions such as: What is our job? Who is doing what? There must be a process of measurable targets, follow-up, analysis and evaluation in a dialogue that reaches all the way out to the individual employees. If all 1,860 of our employees see their role in the big picture and see what their efforts mean, this creates commitment and a better working environment. Work on the new model has proceeded faster than we had dared hope.
We are happy to share our experiences, but it is important that you learn within your own process and that there is someone controlling the speed. It could be someone in your own organisation or a consultant, she points out, explaining that one of the main reasons they chose to work with Ekan AB was the management consultancy’s tremendous expertise in the field of management by objectives and balanced scorecards. Working together, they produced a manual on management by objectives to provide support to managers and employees in their day-to-day work.
